Embracing the Disability: A Community Conversation

Thursday, September 12, 2019 - 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm

Meaningful conversation on how to fight discrimination based on disabilities and how to support members of the community who have faced it.
Often, people living with disabilities cannot reach their full potential because others have trouble embracing the disability, or seeing it as a part of the person and not as the whole person. Spinal Cord Injury Alberta and the Coalitions Creating Equity would like to invite you to take part in a community conversation about discrimination based on mental or physical disabilities.
The information collected during the conversation café will be used by the Coalitions Creating Equity (CCE) and The Regional Advisory Committee on Inclusion, Diversity, and Equality (RACIDE) to develop a community-based response model to effectively respond to incidents of discrimination and hate. This protocol is intended to be a restorative justice and community-focused procedure and is meant to be used in addition to the already existing provincial and federal processes for reporting hate incidents/crimes and acts of discrimination, aiming to increase the effectiveness of the systems already in place to support survivors.
To obtain a Response Model for the community and by the community, we need to hear your voice. The input provided by participants will allow us to understand the complex issue from the perspective of those who have faced discrimination and hate, have tried to help someone who experienced it, or who witnessed such acts.
